Opole Puppet and Actor Theatre is one of the oldest puppet companies in Poland. Established in 1937 and founded by Alojzy Smolka, who hired many prominent actors and crew members, and introduced Polish audiences to work by Czech and Slovak artists. Smolka’s dedication to the maintenance of high quality work greatly increased the Theater’s popularity and loyalty among its audience.
This tradition continues today under the leadership of many other directors following Smolka. Since 1990 the head of the Theatre is Krystian Kobyłka, thanks to whom since 1993 the Puppet Theater has been an independent organization subsidized by the city of Opole budget. Kobyłka has continued the best traditions of the Theatre, developing good cooperation with international artist. What is more, he has opened the theatre for contemporary dramaturgy, both for kids and adults. Numerous premiers and world premieres that have been given in the Theatre are appreciated by national critics and audience not only from Poland.
Theatre’s creators openness for new language of art, creativity and ability to lead a serious dialog with young and adult spectators, are distinctive features of this one of the best puppet stages in Poland.Since 1962 Theatre has organized The National Festival of Puppet Theatre, which is an unique review of shows prepared by puppet theatres, a presentation of the most interesting events in puppet art, and an artistic confrontation and evaluation of theatre creators.Theatre productions have received many awards and have toured in many countries, like Germany, Finland, former Yugoslavia, Ukraine, Sweden, Denmark, Spain, Slovakia, Israel and many others, along with a number of television appearances.
